Employer Check List
Below you will find lists of what you need to do before and after you hire a nanny, housekeeper or nanny-housekeeper. You will also find a third list of obligations that you need to look at while your employee works for you.
Before hiring a nanny, housekeeper or any private domestic staff
- Description of the job. Hours, days, tasks, salary, holidays.
- Requirement list of what your employee needs to have. For example 2 years of experience in childcare, experience cooking Indian food, etc
- Check CV
- Check right to work. Passport, Visa, Pre-settled or Settled status
- Check DBS or police check
- Check 2 references.
- Check Paediatric First Aid certificate. If you are planning to hire childcare help.
After hiring a nanny, housekeeper or any private staff
- Offer of employment
- Employment contract
- Obtain a copy of P45 from previous employers
- Starter checklist. if you cannot obtain a P45, you can download this on HMRC website
- Set up a PAYE scheme. If you don’t have one
- Check if you need to automatically enrol your staff into a workplace pension scheme
During employment
- Work out employee’s pay details and other relevant factors such as sick days, holiday, etc, if applicable
- Submit the pay details of the employee to the HMRC base on the payment frequency – vis RTI’s
- Send your employee’s payslip
- Pay your employee’s wages
- Pay employer and employee’s HMRC liabilities -income taxes, national insurance contribution-
- Pay the appropriate employee and employer’s pension contribution in the appropriate pension scheme
- Complete declaration of compliance with the Pension Regulator
