Nanny Employment and HR

When a family decides to hire a Nanny, Housekeeper or any domestic private staff, they become employers of the staff that will work in their household. The domestic staff will become an employee by law. As in any employment relationship, obligations and benefits will be borne by both parties in the working relationship.

If you are interested in knowing more about the obligations that you get as an employer, visit our Employer’s Obligations section.

As an employer, it is essential to considerer every detail of the employment before your staff’s first day of work. Putting the employment details into a contract will help keep a healthy relationship between your nanny or housekeeper and your family. If you are unsure where to start, please find a résumé list of the details you cannot miss in the employment contract.

Employment Details

Little Ones Payroll advise every family that is planning to hire any domestic private staff to make a contract with the following details in it:

  • The names of the employer and employee.
  • The date when employment began (and any period of continuous employment).
  • Remuneration and the intervals at which it is paid.
  • Hours of work.
  • Holiday entitlement.
  • Entitlement to sick leave and sick pay.
  • Pensions and pension schemes.
  • The entitlement of employer and employee to notice of termination.
  • Job title or job description.
  • Where employment is not permanent, the period for which it is expected to continue or, if it is for a fixed term, the date it ends.
  • Place of work.
  • Details of the existence of any relevant collective agreements.
  • The disciplinary rules and procedures applicable to the employee.
  • The grievance procedure applicable to the employee.

Where to start?

Once you have mentioned the above-recommended details in the employment contract, some employers will be wondering what the process is to get the final list above. Before choosing the starter date for your staff or how many hours they will need to work, it is crucial to list the requirements your nanny, housekeeper, chef or handyman needs to have. Having this list, you will start knowing how many hours and days you will need your new staff to work in your household.

You may have some compulsory requirements, like a Paediatric First Aid certificate if you are looking to hire a nanny, a driver’s licence, DBS check or a specific diploma if you are looking to hire someone to manage your properties or if you are searching for personal assistance.

Creating a Must list of skills for your nanny or housekeeper is essential, but putting some requirements in the Must-Not list is also necessary. Thinking about this will help you form the list of your nanny or housekeeper tasks. This list is an essential part of the employment details and future contract.

Why do I need to specify days and hours of employment?

When you decide to hire a nanny or housekeeper for a daily basis in a permanent or temporary position, you will need to specify how many hours and how many days your employee will work for you as a legal requirement.  Every employee needs to receive a payslip from their employer; establishing your nanny’s timetable from the beginning of the working relationship will make the whole process of creating a weekly or monthly payslip easier.

Knowing how many hours per month your nanny or housekeeper worked will help you calculate their taxes, NIN, pension and holiday allowance. The best place to put the employment working hours is the contract, where both parties agree on the usual working hours and overtime hours.
